The Quince Closet guide

Shipping & packing your gown

A sold dress deserves a safe journey. Here’s how to pack a quinceañera gown, where to get supplies, what shipping usually costs, and where to buy a label with tracking.

How to pack a gown

  1. Clean and inspect first

Make sure the gown is clean and fully dry before packing. Note any loose beads or threads and secure them so nothing snags in transit.

  2. Wrap in acid-free tissue

Stuff the bodice and sleeves lightly with acid-free tissue paper so the gown keeps its shape. Wrap the whole dress in tissue — never plastic directly against the fabric for long periods, since it can trap moisture.

  3. Use a garment bag inside the box

A breathable garment bag adds a layer of protection and makes unboxing feel special. Fold the gown gently along natural seams rather than creasing it sharply.

  4. Choose the right box

A ball gown with a full skirt usually needs a large box — around 24" x 18" x 12" or bigger. The gown should fit snugly with cushioning, not rattle around and not be crushed.

  5. Cushion and waterproof

Line the box with kraft paper or bubble wrap, place the wrapped gown inside, and fill gaps so nothing shifts. Seal the gown in a plastic liner bag inside the box as a moisture barrier, then tape all seams well.

  6. Label, insure, and keep proof

Ship to the exact address on the order, add tracking, and consider insurance for higher-value gowns. Keep your receipt and take a quick photo of the packed box — it protects you if there's ever a dispute.

Where to get boxes & supplies

Home Depot

Heavy-duty medium and large moving boxes (around 18" x 18" x 24") cost just a few dollars in store and fit a full skirt without crushing it.

Visit
Lowe's

Their Classic Large moving box (24" x 18" x 18") with handle holes fits a folded ball gown without crushing the skirt — grab tape and bubble wrap on the same trip.

Visit
Walmart

Large moving boxes plus tissue paper, garment bags, and packing tape, in store or online.

Visit
Amazon

Double-wall heavy-duty and large moving boxes delivered to your door, along with tissue paper, garment bags, and packing tape — handy when you can't make a store run.

Visit
Uline

24" x 18" x 12" multi-depth boxes in 200-test cardboard — noticeably sturdier than a hardware-store box, roughly $4.75 each when bought in a bundle, and the adjustable depth lets you snug the box around the load. Best if you ship more than one dress.

Visit
U-Haul

Large and extra-large moving boxes at most U-Haul locations, great for very full ball gowns.

What shipping usually costs

A packed gown typically weighs 3–8 pounds. These are rough US estimates — always check the carrier’s calculator for your exact box size and destination, and set your listing’s shipping price to cover it.

USPS Ground Advantage

≈ $10–18

Cheapest for most gowns (3–8 lbs). Slower: 2–5 business days. Tracking included. Use your own large box.

USPS Priority Mail

≈ $15–30

1–3 business days, tracking and $100 insurance included. Free USPS boxes are too small for ball gowns — bring your own.

UPS / FedEx Ground

≈ $15–35

Good for very large boxes. Rates vary by distance — check their calculators.
